On Wednesday, August 12th, songwriter and troubadour Tim Easton will release a new book called “Folk Collusion” which documents a 35 day tour of Russia that took place in the September/October of 2019. The book serves as a chronicle of the journey using essays that were first published by NoDepression.com plus photographs taken by Easton, songs, and poems written in between the 17 flights taken throughout Russia. The book also comes with a 13 track folk album that was recorded in various hotel rooms while traveling between destinations such as Sochi, on the Black Sea, through Moscow where Easton performed at the U.S. Ambassador’s residence, Siberia, Vladivostok, Surgut, to Magadan, the sight of many former prisoner work camps under Soviet rule, located 2000 miles West of Anchorage.

Throughout the book, filled with commentary, observations, and questions about current events, Easton lays his thoughts bare on the page. He says “Folk Collusion is about hanging with the people—the travelers, artists, poets, musicians, aficionados, and the day to day citizens who help us make connections.”

The tour itself was sponsored by the Forum For Cultural Exchange, who works in tandem with the State Department to bring American cultural events to foreign lands. The Woody Guthrie Center in Tulsa donated lots of Woody merchandise such as buttons, stickers, shirts, which Easton distributed throughout Russia. The tour venues he performed at were a mixture of clubs, theaters, bars, State sponsored concert halls, and schools.

“My job was to simply perform American folk music and original songs while exchanging music and thoughts with Russian musicians, some of who were the best I’ve ever played with. There was no political motive here, but what an experience to be there while so much turmoil was taking place between our nations. The ambassador was in the process of quitting while I was there, and the last performance at his residence in Moscow was the night I played.”

Folk Collusion is self-published by Easton’s CAMPFIRE PROPAGANDA RECORDS & BOOKS label. He is returning to Alaska to run his songwriting workshop in conjunction with Homer’s Bunnell Street Gallery from March 24th to the 29th. He will perform a book release show at Anchorage’s THE WRITER’S BLOCK bookshop on Wednesday, August 12th. Tour dates are listed at TimEaston.com.
