About this Event

Tim Bluhm is one of the finest singer/songwriters to emerge from California for decades and we would all do better to hear more from him. —Glide Magazine

Tim Bluhm got his start as the primary guitarist and singer for The Mother Hips, a group the San Francisco Chronicle has hailed as “one of the Bay Area’s most beloved live outfits.” Ever-curious and wildly prolific, Bluhm simultaneously released a slew of his own solo and collaborative projects on the side, toured with Nicki Bluhm and The Gramblers, teamed up with The Grateful Dead's Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, opened up Mission Bells Studio, and started a music festival in Big Sur called Hipnic.

After a speed-flying (like paragliding, but faster and more dangerous) accident left him bedridden for the better part of a year as he underwent more than a dozen surgeries, Bluhm experienced a kind of epiphany. "It changed my outlook on life, and it changed my whole self-image," Bluhm said. "It was a humbling thing to be physically incapacitated like that, and it was a reminder of just how fragile we all are. I'm more grateful than ever to be alive right now. In a way, I look at it as almost a nudge from some higher power telling me to look inwards and pay more attention to my musical gifts.” Bluhm signed with Blue Rose Music from his hospital bed, and upon his release, headed into the studio to cut a new record, his first in ten years.

Sorta Surviving is the country record he’s always wanted to put out there. Most of his musical life has found Bluhm steeped in old country songs, particularly those that came out of the oil fields of Bakersfield, California back in the 1950’s and 60’s. He’s worked those songs into The Mother Hips sets and he was instrumental in forming the country band of ace Bay Area players, Brokedown In Bakersfield, that revived many of the old songs and brought them to a hungry audience that hung on every note every night. But this latest record is his true homage to those great tunes and his original songs are worthy of taking a prominent place among the greats of the genre.
