About this event

At the turn of the 20th century, the ability to create windows made from flat sheets of opalescent glass was realized — and with this breakthrough, a new market for stained glass was born. Two artists quickly stood out from the rest of the pack — Louis Comfort Tiffany and John La Farge; once on friendly terms, their relationship soured once one accused the other of stealing, leading to a rivalry on the artistic battlefield. It's time to explore the art of two of the greatest artists of the 20th century's Aesthetic Movement.

Join New York Adventure Club as we uncover the artistic legacies of Louis Comfort Tiffany and John La Farge, two pioneering artists who used opalescent glass in stained glass windows to produce incredibly detailed works of art, earning them prestigious commissions throughout the country — many of which can still be seen today.

Led by Sylvia Laudien-Meo — art historian, museum educator, and NYC tour guide — this virtual journey through the stained glass works of Tiffany and La Farge will include:

  • The 101 on opalescent glass, and how technological advances made it possible for use in windows
  • The Aesthetic Movement in the United States, which attracted artists to the decorative arts and glassmaking
  • The lives and careers of these two leading artists, from their backgrounds in painting and decorative arts, to their connections to wealthy NYC citizens, to the individuals and organizations that commissioned works from them
  • A closer look at their masterpieces still on view in NYC and beyond, which include works inside churches, private clubs, museums collections, and more

Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Sylvia — any and all questions about Tiffany and La Farge are welcomed and encouraged!
