Deel NBN Eurocode 2: Design of Reinforced & Pre-stressed Concrete Structures


This seminar is aimed at equipping structural engineers with both theoretical and practical knowledge on Eurocode 2 for the design of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures. Basic concept of prestressing, the effects of prestressing, prestressing losses, and the assumptions for the analysis and design of reinforced and prestressed concrete cross-sections will be explained. The stress-strain response of sections subjected to axial force and bending moments, the principles of using “initial state” in ultimate resistance and serviceability limit state calculations, shear and torsion design, and the interaction of all internal forces will be clarified as well as the principles of stress limitation check, crack width control, and deflection calculation. Practical examples for the Eurocode 2 design will be performed using effective and comprehensive IDEA software.

Seminar details:

2 sessions, 90 minutes each

 1.       Limit states, design situations, loads and combinations. Example of continuous reinforced concrete beam, beam and standalone section design. Materials - concrete, non-prestressed and prestressing steel - mechanical properties.

2.       Basic concept of prestressing, pre-tensioning and post-tensioning. Equivalent load method, statically determinate and indeterminate effects of prestressing. Concordant tendon, linear transformation of a tendon, design of prestressing, load-balancing method. Losses of prestressing short-term, long-term. Examples.


Computers for the training:

It is advised that participants bring their own lap tops. 30 days full version of the software along with example will be provided, which can be practiced during the seminar.  


Speakers profile


Assoc. Prof. Jaroslav Navrátil, M.Sc., Ph.D. received his Masters in 1986 and PhD degree in 1992 both at Brno University of Technology, where he acquired his experience as a lecturer teaching more than 25 years. He is Chartered Engineer in Statics and Dynamics of Structures and Forensic Expert in Civil Engineering. He published more than 100 research articles, over 50 research reports and expert opinions, and the textbook Prestressed Concrete Structures. Professional focus of Jaroslav Navrátil is the development of computational methods for the design and analysis of structures and their implementation in a form of algorithms and computer programs. His program for Time Dependent Analysis of structures was incorporated into large European software systems and has been used for the analysis of bridges in many European countries. In 2009 he and his former colleague Lubos Sabatka founded new company IDEA RS Ltd, which develops structural engineering software. Jaroslav Navrátil participated in 11 research and development projects at Brno University of Technology and IDEA RS. He participated in the projects that were awarded in the international professional contests.
