July 2, 2 p.m.
South Pacific (1958)
Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Broadway hit about romance and racism on a tropic isle during World War II is based on James Michener’s Pulitzer Prize winning book of short stories, Tales from the South Pacific. The musical score is outstanding with classic songs such as “Some Enchanted Evening”, “Younger than Springtime” and “Bali H’ai.” Rossano Brazzi, Mitzi Gaynor and Juanita Hall star under the direction of Joshua Logan.

July 9, 1 p.m. (note earlier start time this week)
The Keys of the Kingdom (1944)
The personal and professional problems of a devout Catholic priest (Gregory Peck) who is sent to a remote area of China in the 19th century to establish a Christian mission are recounted in this lovely film. The decade-spanning drama was nominated for four Academy Awards, including one for Peck as Best Actor. Joseph L. Mankiewicz and Nunnally Johnson wrote the screenplay based on A. J. Cronin’s novel.

July 16, 1 p.m. (note earlier start time this week)
Doctor Zhivago (1965, Rated PG)
David Lean’s beautifully photographed, sweeping epic of star-crossed love during the Russian Revolution was nominated for 10 Academy Awards. Zhivago (Omar Sharif), a doctor and poet, loves his wife but is compulsively drawn to his mistress and muse, Lara (Julie Christie), as Russia is beset by war and revolution. The film is based on Boris Pasternak’s novel, which won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1958.

July 23, 2 p.m.
Beau Geste (1939)
When their aunt’s famous “Blue Water” sapphire is mysteriously stolen, the three Geste brothers each profess responsibility and run off to join the French Foreign Legion where they must contend with a sadistic commander and rampaging native tribesmen. This rousing adventure film, directed by William Wellman and staring Gary Cooper, Ray Milland and Brian Donlevy is another gem from Hollywood’s Golden Year of 1939.

July 30, 2 p.m.
Lost Horizon (1937)
Frank Capra directed this seductively optimistic fantasy about a group of world-weary travelers who stumble upon a community named Shangri-La hidden in a secret valley high in the Himalayas. Shangri-La seems to be a utopia where life is perfect and everyone is happy, healthy and lives for centuries, but is it too good to be true? The film, nominated for seven Academy Awards, stars Ronald Colman, Jane Wyatt and Sam Jaffe.
