Description

The National Center for Atmospheric Research invites you to join us for the third lecture in the 2017 NCAR Explorer Series:

On July 15th, get the inside scoop on thunderstorms and tornadoes, with NCAR's Scientist Morris Weisman

3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Our hands-on exhibits about weather, climate, and the Sun-Earth connection will be open for viewing before the talk (staff will be on hand to answer your questions)

4:00 - 5:00 p.m. Talk by Dr. Morris Weisman: "Thunderstorms and Tornadoes: Tales From a Life-long Storm Researcher and Chaser"

5:00 - 5:30 p.m. Questions & conversations

Talk Description:

In this talk he will review some of the basic advances in both understanding and forecasting these extreme events, with a special emphasis on notable events in Colorado, including the Windsor and Limon tornadoes. Topics will include supercell storms, which generate the most intense tornadoes and hailstorms worldwide, as well as landspouts, which are a weaker form of tornadoes and somewhat of a Colorado specialty. He will also talk about recent field campaigns and the evolution of storm chasing over the years, including some of his own anecdotes from chasing on the plains of Colorado.

Admission is free, however seating is limited. In order to ensure a seat in the lecture hall, please obtain a free Evenbrite ticket. A sign language interpreter will be present at the lecture.

If there are no tickets remaining, we encourage you to sign up for an overflow ticket. It is very likely that those with overflow tickets will be able to see the talk in the main seminar room. If there is not enough room, we will provide another space where you will be able to watch a live feed of the talk.
