You already fixed a puncture, are comfortable with tools and want to build up your bicycle mechanics skills? Or you already followed our beginners classes and want to become even more “vélonome”? Then this series of classes could be the next mile!

Thursday the 12th of March

ALL ABOUT YOUR WHEELS

A wheel isn't just a wheel.... In thiss class you'll learn everything you need to know about tyres, tubes and spokes;

  • Discover the different sizes of rims, tyres and tubes and how to check their compatibility
  • Get to know the most common tyre and tube types
  • Understand the functioning of every wheel part
  • Learn how to change a spoke (understanding how + practical exercise)
  • How to straighten or “true” a wheel (understanding the principle + practical exercise)

Thursday the 19th of March

ALL ABOUT YOUR YOUR GEARS

Discover what type of gear helps you climbing that Mont des Arts. Learn to understand its mechanics, how to tune a rear derailleur and how to replace worn cables.

  • Get to know the basic vocabulary on the gearing system and learn about its different components, the used materials and the appropriate tools.
  • Learn how to assess its initial quality and current state.
  • Learn what can be done to improve their performance and on which it depends.
  • Together we will look at what can concretely be done, during this class, to your bikes’ derailleur, making use of only a few tools.

* These are the systems that will be treated in class: derailleur gears; Nexus and Sturmey Archer (only adjustments and cable replacement)

ALL ABOUT YOUR BRAKES

Stopping is as important as pedalling! During this class discover what type of brakes make your bike hold still. Learn to understand their mechanics and how to make those pads squeeze well...

In detail:

  • Get to know the basic vocabulary of the braking system and learn about its parts, used materials and the appropriate tools.
  • Learn how to assess their initial quality and current condition
  • Learn what can be done to improve their performance and on which it depends.
  • Together we will look at what can concretely be done during this class to your bikes’ brakes, using only a few tools

* These are the brake types that will be treated in class: caliper, cantilever, v-brake, Magura (hydraulic rim) and disc brakes (mechanical and hydraulic). Not on the list: the purging of hydraulic brakes.

ALL ABOUT YOUR BEARINGS

Discover the beauty of a bearing system and discover in which parts of your bike they are hidden. And why are all those rings and balls so crucial?

  • Get to understand the mechanical principle of ball bearings and where they are needed.
  • Learn on what it’s performance depends and what can be done in order for your bike to run smoothly (practical exercise)

* Adjustable Removable, cone and cuvette

Having followed this classes will make you feel more confident in doing bike maintenance and regular adjustments. Beware, because afterwards you’ll maybe want to hang around in our DIY-workshop forever…

  • The complete course consists of 4 sessions of 2 hours each; every class treats a specific bike component, always in relation to the functioning of the bike as a whole.
  • Each session has a theoretical and practical part using carefully selected didactic materials. During class we won’t fix your bike, but we'll use it for observation and diagnostics.
  • By the end of the classes you'll have a completed technical data sheet on which the condition of your bike and its separate parts is described.
