Event description
ArtWeek at Uva - Learn about historical trends in drinkware from a Master Glass Blower + receive your own unique hand-blown wine glass!

About this Event

As part of ArtWeek in Plymouth, join us for a thrilling seminar on the material and cultural evolution of drinking glasses! We will begin 4000 years ago with the accidental "invention" of glass. We will then jump from the development of glass blowing in ancient Rome though Medieval times when artists and craftsmen started designing a wide array of drinking glasses. (If you've seen Game of Thrones you'll be fascinated to learn about the different glasses they used, and why.) Through the humble everyday drinking glasses we will get a glimpse into different people's culture, politics and colorful drinking games!

Finally we will cover the different types of glasses used in drinkware through the ages and why today, each type of wine has a different shaped glass.

At the end of the class you will be able to choose your own hand-blown wine glass made by the presenter, Rebecca Potash.

Dr Rebecca Potash is a South Shore native and has been blowing glass since 2004 when she was only 14 years old. She worked for the Corning Museum of Glass, the world expert on all things glass, as a docent and then as a glassblowing demonstrator. She's blown glass in (or off the shores of) every continent except Asia, and yes, that includes Antarctica!

Tickets are non-refundable, but are transferable.
