Event description

Description

Professionally facilitated by Rick Irving, MSW, this workshop will meet every other week for 3 sessions total (that is, Nov 2, Nov 16 and Nov 30th from 7 to 8:30 PM). Having 3 sessions gives parents the chance to learn new ideas and techniques, try them out at home, and return with questions and to learn additional strategies. Description: A significant number of teenagers report feeling stressed and anxious, certainly more so than we did when we were growing up. As parents, we sometimes struggle on a daily, if not hourly, basis with how best to support our kids while also increasing their resilience and sense of self-management. The recent Youth Risk Behavior Surveys suggest that many teens are trying to deal with internal issues and external pressures, and are having a hard time finding a healthy balance. This workshop will focus on specific ways to help teens, language to use, words to avoid, and skills to model and teach. Specific topics include: * How teens experience stress and where it comes from, from their perspective * How parents can be comforting and still have their kids move forward * How to listen therapeutically, how to talk therapeutically * How to keep doors open; how not to rush in but be present and guiding. All these topics center around: * How to listen to, react to and guide your children therapeutically * Ways to help them understand, lower and manage stress * Methods for having perspective about their lives as teenagers * How you as parents can provide perspective. Please bring a notepad and your specific questions and concerns. You will leave with ideas and language to help you feel more confident as a parent of a teen.
