Event description

Description

This event will discuss issues surrounding the Freedom of Expression in the Great Lakes Region, which consists of Burundi, Rwanda, Congo, Uganda. The threats throughout the Great Lakes Region are different, however, it is clear that all these countries have their own challenges when it comes to critical reporting, in regards to people in a position of power. This event will explain the background to this problem and will have a panel who have suffered the consequences.

The Panel:
Fred Muvunyi
A Rwanda journalist working for Germany's international broadcaster, Deutsche Welle and opinion contributor for the Washington Post. Before he went into exile, Fred was head of the Rwanda Media Commission, an independent media watchdog which champions the rights of journalists and free speech. He continues to report on the Great Lakes Region with a particular focus on the human and political rights in the region.
