Incident Response Presentation: Held for Ransom - RSA Incident Responder Christopher Ahern will present on a series of recent engagements, involving ransomware and extortion cases. The presentation will focus on the actual events that took place during and leading up to the incidents, the actions taken by the company involved, and the gaps the company would have missed if the RSA Incident Response team had not been able to assist with the investigation. These engagements were the basis for some of the recent DHS and FBI notifications related to ransomware.

Kent Backman is a Threat Intelligence Analyst with RSA FirstWatch, a research and analysis organization focused on emerging and sophisticated threats from around the globe. Within the FirstWatch group, Mr. Backman's threat specialty is espionage-focused actors. His interest and skill in ethical hacking developed while managing web servers for Fortune 500 companies. An analyst for several security incident response teams, he also spent several years in Baghdad as part of the advisory team to the Iraq Ministry of Defense, specializing in network security and Linux engineering. He holds RHCT, MCSA, CISSP, and CEH certifications, and authored the book, Hands on Ethical Hacking and Network Defense.

Christopher Ahearn is a Senior Incident Response Consultant at RSA. With over 15 years in the security industry he has been on the front lines in responding to and handling network security threats, conducting network and host forensics across the enterprise, and managing global intrusion cases. Mr. Ahearn has provided his services to clients to help architect, implement, manage and operate incident detection and response programs for Fortune 500 customers across the world. He has been deployed to numerous engagements that required deep network and system analysis, and developed intelligence reporting and response procedures for global customers that are still used today.
