The Fashion and Design Society (FADS), a group of Design majors at the University of California, Davis, is pleased to announce its annual fashion show exhibiting the Signature Collections of its Junior and Senior class members.
At first glance, one would never consider UC Davis as a likely candidate for having a Design Department, as the University is better known for its sciences and research capabilities. However, this very environment encourages the exploration of principles outside of one’s major, resulting in more well-rounded and unique inspirations for Design students. Ranging from cultural references like Greek and Hmong, historical sources including Victorian and Art Deco, to the nature based sea life and desert themes, one can be certain this showcase will not be your typical fashion show. With great support and guidance from Professor Susan Avila MFA, students are highly encouraged to develop their own textiles for their designs through a variety of media such as hand-dyeing, printing, and laser-cutting. In addition to designing and manipulating textiles, all of the students are required to sew their own collections, in order to display an aptitude for what they have learned throughout the course of his or her major.
With an emphasis on sustainability at UC Davis, many of the designers are putting their social awareness on display by repurposing old clothing and using natural dyes. Rather than enforcing the hippie dippy stereotype of Davis or the green movement, these sustainable collections will definitely make audiences question what it means to look and go green. As both producers and designers, students from the Signature Collections course are sure to put on an exciting and memorable show proudly representing UC Davis.
When & Where
Fashion and Design Society
The Fashion and Design Society (FADS) at UC Davis is a student-run organization that encourages student leadership and involvment in the production of two annual Spring fashion shows. Students take 10 weeks to create a Signature Fashion Collection which expresses each of their unique design perspectives and showcases the skills they have learned during their time at the UC Davis Department of Design.
FADS students participate in fundraising, working closely with Professor Ann Savageau's Bags Across the Globe Project. Campus textile waste is repurposed into reusable shopping bags in an effort to raise awareness about and help lower plastic bag waste and its effect on the environment. All proceeds from fundraising go towards the production of the fashion shows.
By participating in FADS, students not only participate in raising sustainablity awareness but also learn vital networking and management skills for their future careers.
