Description

Online ticket sales end at 9 am on Sunday. Additional tickets will be sold at the door.

The Thomas Cole National Historic Site presents the 13th Annual Raymond Beecher Lecture, featuring Ned Sullivan, President of Scenic Hudson. In his lecture entitled Still in Eden: Connecting People to the Landscapes that Inspired Thomas Cole, Sullivan will speak to the transformative impacts of initiatives to preserve our local landscapes and connect people to these special places. Recent initiatives include the Hudson River Skywalk scheduled to open this November and the newly opened Mawignack Preserve in Catskill.

Scenic Hudson is a non profit organization in the Hudson Valley that helps citizens and communities preserve land and farms and create parks where people experience the outdoors and enjoy the Hudson River.

President of Scenic Hudson since 1999, Ned Sullivan has directed the organization through a period of dramatic growth in its impact—in preserving the Hudson Valley’s natural assets, revitalizing its waterfronts and encouraging economic development through investment in green infrastructure.

Under Ned’s leadership, Scenic Hudson has:

  • Forged partnerships responsible for preserving nearly 20,000 acres of open space and farmland throughout the valley;
  • Turned contaminated waterfronts into exciting public parks; and
  • Played pivotal roles in three of the region’s most transformative projects—Walkway Over the Hudson, Dia:Beacon and “daylighting” (or uncovering) the Saw Mill River in Yonkers.

In addition, Ned continues to spearhead Scenic Hudson’s collaborative efforts to secure a comprehensive PCB cleanup of the Hudson River.

Ned previously served as Maine’s Environmental Commissioner and deputy commissioner of New York’s Department of Environmental Conservation. He earned a B.A. from Williams College and master’s degrees from Yale University’s School of Management and School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. He resides in Red Hook with his wife Tara, Deputy Executive Director of the New York State Bridge Authority.
