2nd Annual Thom Storey Scholarship Fund Golf Tournament

About this Event

The Thom Storey Scholarship Fund is named for the beloved Belmont University professor who spent his career shaping future journalists and communication specialists by instilling values of accuracy, credibility and fairness along with the skills needed to succeed in the ever-changing media industry.

Thom, who grew up in North Tonawanda, N.Y., was a life-long storyteller and teacher. After graduating from St. Bonaventure University in upstate New York, he became a sportswriter and columnist. He then moved on to covering schools, the courts and public affairs. He earned his master’s degree from Iowa State University, and as a graduate student advised the school’s daily newspaper and worked part time covering sports for the Ames Tribune.

He was hired by Belmont in 1985 to start a mass communications program, which eventually grew into a major with now hundreds of graduates. For several years, he was chair of the Media Studies Department and adviser of the campus newspaper, The Vision. For much of his career at Belmont, Storey also worked as a copy editor and travel editor at The Tennessean.

Storey received Belmont’s Chaney Distinguished Professor Award for superior teaching and was named Journalism Educator of the Year by the Southeast Journalism Conference. He mentored students both inside and outside the journalism program, and his graduates went on to work with media organizations such as The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Associated Press, CNN, Turner Broadcasting and Cox Media Group.

Thom was also a devoted family man, colleague and friend. He was happiest when sharing with those closest to him his passion for music, food, a good beer and a round of golf. He earned the name Linko in college because he was the “missing link” to what became a group of life-long friends. For many of us, Thom was the link to our best memories and lessons learned during our time at Belmont not to mention our future careers.

Thom passed away in 2018, three years after he was diagnosed with cancer. In his final months, he was still making recommendations for students that lead to interviews and then jobs. The scholarship fund not only honors a man who meant so much to so many but allows his legacy to continue by providing financial assistance to future journalists who want to study at the program he founded.

To get the scholarship endowed at Belmont, Thom’s friends and family are raising money with a golf tournament:
