Event description

Description

An Autumn walk in the woods - with a difference.

The trouble with woods is, the trees are so tall that you can't see what they're up to. Thistle Wood, just off the Derwent Walk between Shotley Bridge and Ebchester, is a young plantation where you can see the fascinating lives of young trees, up close and personal. The wood has been planned as a productive nature reserve: full of challenges and opportunities for humans to work alongside wildlife.

Thistle Wood's owner, Max Adams, explains how and why trees do what they do; how and why to plant them and how to ensure that they'll thrive for the next hundred years.

Max Adams, author of The Wisdom of Trees and The Little Book of Planting Trees, is also a volunteer with the Land of Oak and Iron.

To get to Thistle Wood, park at Ebchester Station or Shotley Bridge station. From Ebchester walk south towards Shotley Bridge Station, about 400 yards until you cross Whinny Lane. From Shotley Bridge Station walk north towards Ebchester until you reach Whinny Lane after 600 yards. The entrance to Thistle Wood is through the tall wooden gates just uphill from the crossroad.
