The Rehabilitation Research Center at the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center
The Rehabilitation Research Center (RRC) at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center (SCVMC) conducts research to better understand and improve outcomes after TBI and SCI. Outcomes studied include the functional, vocational, and life satisfaction areas that are important to people with and without disabilities. The RRC strives to meet the needs of injured persons and their families for information, education, and support. The RRC is located at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center in San Jose, California. It is funded through grants from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, US Department of Education.
For the past quarter century Santa Clara Valley Medical Center has been actively involved in the "Model Systems" projects sponsored by the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research. These projects allowed centers of excellence to expand in the areas of clinical improvement, outcome research, and community programs. Past Principal Investigators have included Sheldon Berrol, MD, Conal Wilmot, MD, Karyl Hall, EdD., Peter Werner, MD, Tamara Bushnik, PhD, and Kazuko Shem, MD. Their work has greatly improved the field of rehabilitation and the lives of individuals with brain and spinal cord injuries.
The Principal Investigators of the current TBI Model System Project are Jeffrey Englander, MD and Stephanie Kolakowsky-Hayner, PhD. The RRC staff continue to work closely with the clinical staff to enhance the care offered during inpatient rehabilitation, develop continuity of care after discharge, and conduct TBI & SCI-related research.
