Description

The God Squad is a project of The Village Square, devoted to building community across divides.

As much as it’s hard to take our eyes off of Washington, D.C. lately, ultimately, it’s neighbors like us in hometowns like this one who decide who we are to each other. We’ll get The Fab Five God Squadders out of their summer sabbaticals talking the Catholic principle of “subsidiarity” – being engaged closest to the people – and posing the question of how we’re doing in this place, with these people. And we'll talk about what local communities can do about national division. Oh and we'll warmly welcome Rabbi Michael Shields, our newest addition.

Facilitated by: Father Tim Holeda, St. Thomas More Co-Cathedral

God Squad is generously sponsored by The Grove at Canopy, a luxurious community of active, assisted and independent living residences in Tallahassee.

Menu: Ham, turkey, or roast beef with lettuce, tomatoes, and Swiss cheese (mayo and mustard packets) on a fresh baked hoagie sub roll. Sides include potato chips, pasta salad, fresh baked oatmeal raisin cookie, and a gala apple. Cheese sandwiches are available for vegetarians.

Lunch provided by The Grove at Canopy is $10 if you register through the Wednesday ahead of the program ($15 after). The program is free if you’d like to bring your own lunch or not eat.

Meet the God Squad, the brains behind our series “Faith, Food, Friday: Improbable conversations for people of faith and no faith at all (because talking politics wasn’t hard enough). Whoever you are, whatever your beliefs, bring an open mind, an open heart (and an empty stomach) for a continuing conversation that makes it safe to bring your beliefs to the public square - just as you are. We hope you'll join us as we explore what happens when people of good will who might disagree cross each others' thresholds and break a little bread together.

From left to right: Rev. Gary Shultz, First Baptist Church; Pastor Darrick McGhee of Bible Based Church; Betsy Ouellette Zierden of Good Samaritan United Methodist Church; Father Tim Holeda, Co-Cathedral of St. Thomas More; and Rabbi Michael Shields of Temple Israel.

Parking Directions: Parking available in the metered spaces on Park Avenue, Adams, Duval or College or at Kleman Plaza (there is a fee). A few spots are available in the First Baptist lot off of Duval Street. Please do not park in the covered First Baptist parking garage off Duval as those spaces are reserved.

Directions: Enter First Baptist Church (108 W. College Avenue) from either main Adams Street or main Duval Street entrance. Go downstairs and you will see the check-in table in front of the Fellowship Hall. If you're early, you might need to ask to be buzzed in.
