Event description

Description

As a part of the African Lodge No. 459 re-opening weekend, a special performance of a new play, THIS HOUSE will take place on April 27, 2018, at the William E. Reed Auditorium, 24 Washington St, Dorchester, MA. Doors open at 7pm for a 7:30 pm curtain. The performance is free and open to the public.

THIS HOUSE is the fifth play in the AMONG BROTHERS series by multi-award-winning playwright Mwalim *7), chronicling the formation of African Lodge by Prince Hall and it’s eventual transformation from African Lodge 459 to African Grand Lodge, to the Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. Whereas Freemasonry has had Black members throughout it’s existence, the American colonies and subsequent country was the first place to bar Blacks from joining the lodges, leading to Prince Hall and 14 free Black men in Boston gaining access to the craft through an Irish Military Lodge under he British Army on Castle William Island in 1775 and subsequently forming African Lodge on July 3, 1776. In the years to follow, the members of African Lodge would be ardent abolitionists of slavery. This is part of our story.
