Event description
Building back better for healthy air, healthy planet

About this event

Air pollution is one of the key environmental crises in Asia and the Pacific, with 92 per cent or 4 billion people exposed to unhealthy levels of air pollution. Together with climate change and biodiversity loss, air pollution is one of the “three planetary crises”. It is damaging the environment and people’s health.

Air pollution affects everyone, but the most susceptible are the vulnerable which includes women, children, the elderly, and the poor, who traditionally have limited access to healthcare services. Stronger, urgent action is needed, especially with emerging evidence suggesting that air pollution may be further putting people at risk of COVID-19.

We have the solutions to beat air pollution but must act faster to ensure that they not only benefits human health but also have an impact on energy, sustainable consumption and production, and climate action.

Asia Pacific can lead the transformative action towards better air quality, capitalizing on momentum for clean air. The Third Asia Pacific Clean Air Partnership (APCAP) Joint Forum will showcase the region’s progress to beat air pollution and discuss opportunities to accelerate clean air solutions and support socio-economic recovery. The meeting, hosted by the Ministry of Environment of Japan, will have the theme “Build back better for healthy air, healthy planet”, and will be held virtually on 8-9 September 2021.

The Third APCAP Joint Forum serves as a regional platform for clean air to:

  • Recognize progress and showcase solutions: will feature regional, national and sub-national progress in reducing air quality using innovative approaches and partnerships, in line with the UN Environment Assembly Resolution 3/8 on Preventing and Reducing Air Pollution Globally.
  • Inform new evidence: will share and discuss emerging science and challenges in air pollution control and identify opportunities on how they can be addressed. This includes lessons learned from the pandemic and how we can rebuild better and in a sustainable manner that will also help improve air quality.
  • Inspire and accelerate action: call for action from government, private sector, and civil society leaders on how to scale-up and accelerate clean air solutions and link recovery efforts to address environmental and social issues, including air quality.

The Third APCAP Joint Forum contributes to the commemoration of the International Day of Clean Air for blue skies in the Asia and the Pacific region.
