Event description

Description

THINKING TOGETHER

for 1st–3rd graders and their caregivers

October 6, 13, 20, and 27, 2:30 - 4 p.m.

Thinking Together invites children and their caregivers to look, talk, and think together. Using works of art as springboards for discussion, Thinking Together will help children develop critical-reasoning skills by discussing thought-provoking questions in a caring, critical, and creative community. The program will also equip caregivers with techniques to take part in and nurture deep thinking through dialogue.

Thinking deeply takes time. The program is most beneficial when all participants are present at each of the four sessions.

Thinking Together is a collaboration between the Meadows Museum and the “Philosophy for Children” project at the University of North Texas. Fall sessions will be facilitated by Dr. Tyson Lewis and UNT graduate and doctoral students. Philosophy for Children (commonly abbreviated P4C) is a program initially developed by Matthew Lipman and Ann Margaret Sharp in the 1970s in order to foster critical, creative, and caring thinking skills in young students. Dr. Tyson Lewis

Dr. Tyson E. Lewis is a professor of art education at UNT. Previously, he was an associate professor in Educational Foundations at Montclair State University, New Jersey, which houses the Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children (IAPC). As a scholar, he is interested in developing new approaches to understanding the role of the teacher in community-of-inquiry approaches to philosophy for children. As a teacher, he continues to experiment with dialogic classrooms centered on art, aesthetic philosophy, and educational philosophy.

$100 for the 4-part series for nonmembers; $75 for museum members. Price includes the cost of admission.

Ticket is valid for one child and one caregiver. Caregiver must be present for the entire session. Multiple children per caregiver is allowed.
