The California Community College Online Education Initiative, Foothill College and The NROC Project invite you to a working session:

Thinking Outside the [Placement] Box:  Leveraging Technology and Promising Practices to Impact College Readiness and Student Success

Wednesday, November 1, 2017
Foothill College Sunnyvale Center
9am to 3:30pm

To support all our work to ensure student success, it is important to share a common understanding of the role of assessment, placement, and emerging alternative models and tools, and the impact they have on readiness, retention, and completion.

Shifting ideas around placement and readiness have made this work both challenging and exciting.  In California, we have seen the sunsetting of Compass, delays in the release of a common assessment, and mixed results from the use of standard placement tools (e.g., Compass/Accuplacer).

We invite you and your colleagues to join the conversation as we explore new and emergent models to prepare our students for success.

Dr. Sue Cain, Senior Fellow, Academic Policy and College Readiness Council on Postsecondary Education, will open the day with a keynote focusing on strategies, research, and lessons learned from college readiness, retention, and completion initiatives in the state of Kentucky.

GETTING TO WORK: The keynote will be followed by guided roundtable discussions. We will then “put pen to paper” as institutional teams are guided through a workshop-style session intended to help them think through the implementation of one idea/model from start to finish—leaving the session with an actionable plan.

We strongly encourage college “teams” to attend. Teams should include those who are tasked with addressing issues of readiness, placement, and outreach/transition programs; suggested representatives include but are not limited to:

  • Assessment Supervisor
  • Dean of Counseling
  • Dean of Language Arts
  • Dean of Mathematics/Physical Sciences
  • CSSOs and CIOs

This one-day workshop is free to attend and is limited to 100 participants.

Please register your team by October 27, 2017.  Continental breakfast, lunch and free parking will be provided.

Contact Dr. Barbara Illowsky Chief Academic Affairs Officer of the OEI, Dr. Denise Swett, Vice President of Student Services at Foothill College with questions.

Additionally, current NROC Project members may wish to contact Dani Pedrotti, Director of Membership Development.
