Description

In conjunction with WUF 9, Think City is proud to host another Think City Talks series focusing on city designs and its impact to the community.

3 Board Members from International Council of Design (ico-D) will be sharing their insights and experiences in the relevant topics as below;

"Powered by Locals - Design Interventions for 'Smartness' in Cities" - by Cihangir Istek

The level of 'smartness' in cities is largely considered as the aggregation of improvements in technologies, infrastructures, public services, and the accessibility of urban resources and assets. However, recognizing the involvement of local people within the urban experience and their impact on the quality of life is very critical. This presentation, while reporting on some 'smart city' initiatives, will argue that: (1) Development of successful communication and engaging environments for inclusive and sustainable communities requires 'smart' design strategies; (2) Strategies that focus on education and participation of community members will have a stronger impact on the overall quality of urban life; 3) Macro-level approaches to cities, driven by governance, technology and economy, need to be paired with micro-level design interventions that involve local actors.

"Interdisciplinarity + Social Impact" - by Johnathon Strebly

Designing for communities requires designers to provide inclusivity, accessibility, and collaboration to ensure the voices of those impacted are heard. By engaging and learning from multiple design disciplines, we are better suited to provide opportunities and solutions that consider the social implications on our community from all perspectives and lenses. This talk will look into the methodologies and process of interdisciplinarity in the built environment, and examples of how our neighbourhoods and well being are improved through engaged design practices.

"Cape Town has recently been named UNECSO City of Design(First city in Africa to achieve this accolade)– What does this mean to its residents?" by Prof Des Laubscher

We all believe that design can have an impact on all our lives, but how do we bring this to reality and how do we engage with empathy and user centred design within this context? Are we the saviours or the failures? Cape Town introduces an interesting case study

*Free seatings, registration is mandatory. This event is fully sponsored by Think City. Seats are limited and on first come first serve basis. Participants without ticket will be denied entry.
