These Violent Delights: an Adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet
Fri, March 31, 2017, 7:30 PM – 9:30 PM PDT
Responding to the social and political world we find ourselves in, this adaptation asks, "In a threatening world, what does safety mean and when do we get to be vulnerable?" In These Violent Delights a group of young dissidents reenact Romeo and Juliet in order to break from an oppressive structure. Through their reenactment, the characters have unexpected discoveries about love and freedom, gender, and sexuality. Reed College Theatre Department’s adaptation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet is created in collaboration with theatre students and takes as its inspiration Joe Calarco’s 1997 adaptation, Shakespeare’s R + J.
