Program Description: Home / school based therapy refers to situations where the therapist conducts therapy or assessment within the home or school environment. This type of practice comes with many advantages for clients and clinicians - the clinician has the benefit of seeing the natural environment, observing and assessing behavior within that environment, identifying environmental precipitants and reinforcers that maintain behavior, and implement strategies for change in the actual environment that the behavior occurs. It also comes with added complexities in the areas of clinical skills, boundaries, logistical arrangements, risk management and safety, cultural sensitivity, ethics and confidentiality.
Goals:
• Increase understanding of home / school based treatment, its various forms and functions and
• Understand the criteria that make home / school based therapy an appropriate form of treatment.
• Increase awareness of challenges and risks associated with doing out of office treatment.
Objectives:
• Differentiate between home / school based therapy and Case Management services
• Give examples of when clinical intervention would be enhanced by home / school based therapy.
• Name the steps involved in planning an effective home/school based therapy experience
• Explain and give examples of the complexity of boundaries in out of office therapy
• Identify 3 risk management issues common in home and school based therapy
• Using case examples demonstrate ability to create a plan for therapy that takes into consideration client confidentiality and potential ethical risks.

Workshop Outline:
1. Defining out of office therapy (What is home based therapy; School based therapy?)
2. Who can benefit?
3. What are appropriate treatment goals for home based therapy…when do I use it?
4. Planning for success: steps to ensure effective outcomes
a. Know your purpose / identify mutually agreed upon goals.
b. Be aware of personal bias: Respect culture of family / school
c. Structure the experience: who, what, when, where, why, how long?
d. Establish and communicate limits and boundaries (rules)

5. Do Therapy:
a. Assess the environment: precipitants, triggers, reinforcers, motivating factors
b. Skill building: teaching, coaching, modeling, practice sessions
c. Assigning homework
d. Evaluate change
e. Terminating / closure
6. What are the primary considerations that need to be considered
a. Dual roles
b. Confidentiality
c. Gifts
d. Managing risk and ensuring safety
e. Giving feedback and direct communication
