Program Description:

Good clinical intervention requires that clinicians be able to translate assessment data obtained during the diagnostic intake into an appropriate plan for intervention. In this training participants will learn and practice more advanced skills associated with developing a clinical formulation and creating a treatment plan. An active learning environment will be created through the use of case presentations, the sharing of clinical successes / challenges, and group discussion.

Goals:

  • Understand the difference between clinical assessment, clinical formulation, and treatment planning and the role each plays in the change process.
  • Increase ability to develop a clincial formualtion and clinical hypothesis by integrating social-emotional, cognitive, physical, and cultural information to explain the identifed symptoms and problems.
  • Translate clinical formulation into goals for intervention that incorporate functioning in all domains of human development.
  • Learn to integrate interventions from a variety of theoretical approaches to tailor interventions to fit client's individual characteristics and needs.

Objectives:

  • Compare and contrast the role of assessment, diagnosis, clinical formulation, and treatment planning in the treatment of mental mental health disorders.
  • Using assessment data create a clincial formulation and develop a working clinical hypothesis.
  • Create an individualized plan for intervention with targeted goals and objectives that integrate interventions from various theoretical orientations.
  • Explain the relationship between the clinical formulation and hypothesis and treatment outcomes.
