The roles of mental health specialists in the care of gender exploring, gender non-binary, and transgender youth are diverse and changing. This continuing education session targets key current issues in the field of youth gender care, drawing upon gender-research findings and case examples to address the following questions:
In what situations are mental health services indicated and recommended for gender diverse or transgender youth?

What are the roles of mental health professionals in supporting gender diverse youth and their families (parents and siblings)?

What clinical techniques are available to clinicians to support gender discernment in gender exploring youth?

What is the role of the mental health clinician in terms of recommending youth for gender affirming hormones (i.e., cross-sex hormones)?

The session will also address the common co-occurrence of neurodiversity (and especially autism) and gender diversity, presenting techniques to support the many transgender youth who are also autistic.

Learning Objectives

1. Participants will be able to describe the primary roles of mental health providers in youth gender care, as well as situations in which mental health supports may not be indicated.
2. Participants will demonstrate awareness of a range of therapeutic techniques developed and/or adapted for gender diverse youth clients.
3. Participants will be able to discuss the evidence regarding the co-occurrence of neurodiversity and gender diversity.
4. Participants will be able to apply therapeutic approaches for supporting youth with this co-occurrence and their families.

Dr. John Strang is a clinical neuropsychologist at Children’s National Medical Center, where he founded the Gender Development Research Program. Dr. Strang also founded and directs the Gender and Autism Program, a clinical service for the many youth with co-occurring autism and gender dysphoria. He led an international expert workgroup to develop the first clinical guidelines for neurodiverse transgender youth. His research efforts aim to expand the precision of gender assessments by developing new gender-related measures and assessment techniques. Dr. Strang is also working to develop new therapeutic approaches to help gender diverse youth explore and consider appropriate gender-related supports.
