About this Event

Presented in conjunction with The Pencil Is a Key: Drawings by Incarcerated Artists, The Drawing Center will host a performance of "The Nature of the Crime," a play by the Theatre of the Oppressed NYC about the role that crime plays in people’s lives. Theatre of the Oppressed NYC partners with community members at local organizations to form theatre troupes. These troupes devise and perform plays based on their challenges confronting economic inequality, racism, and other social, health and human rights injustices. After each performance, actors and audiences engage in theatrical brainstorming—called Forum Theatre—with the aim of catalyzing creative change on the individual, community, and political levels.

“The nature of our lives does not fit the nature of our crimes. We’re not just pieces of paper to be processed; we’re not two-dimensional characters in a crime drama. Our lives are complex and our motivations are rich—and yet we become collateral damage in a system built to dehumanize us and continue to punish us even after we have served our allotted time.” Devised by and featuring: Carolyn, Darryl, Karen, Mersadez, Matthew, Raheem, Stanley, Camilla, Lywon, Arbri, and Jokers John & Mike, with assistance from Becca.
