Event description

Description

Theaster Gates (American, b.1973) is a Contemporary artist working in a diverse practice of installation art to address topics of social justice, gentrification, and urban planning. A life-long Chicago native, Gates originally studied urban planning and worked as the Chicago Transit Authority’s arts planner. Today he is a hugely influential artist with a visible impact on both the community and infrastructure of Chicago. His most celebrated piece, The Dorchester Project, entailed Gates buying up old, dilapidated buildings and renovating them into cultural institutions that celebrate the people and culture of Chicago’s South Side. Gates describes himself as equal parts artist, bureaucrat, and hustler.

Gates is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Artes Mundi award in 2015, the inaugural Vera List Center Prize for Art and Politics in 2013, and being named a Fellow of United States Artists in 2012. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Whitechapel Gallery in London, the Studio Museum in Harlem, the Punta della Dogna in Venice, and at Documenta 13 in Kassel, among many others. He currently teaches at the University of Chicago.
