Description

The Stages of the Writing Process: Focusing on Planning and Revision Strategies, is a three-day series designed to engage teachers in best practices around supporting high school writers in revising their writing. We will explore and practice strategies in manageable chunks that address surface revisions and deep revisions. Participants will leave the series with a set of strategies to help them move students away from, “I wrote it once, I’m done” into multi-draft writing. The foundation for the three-day series is based on the following six principles from J. Hochman’s work. We will also dive into the work of J. Serravallo and K. Gallagher.

Six Principles

v Students need explicit instruction in writing.

v Sentences are the building blocks of all writing.

v When embedded in the content of the curriculum, writing instruction is a powerful teaching tool.

v The content of the curriculum drives the rigor of the writing activities.

v Grammar is best taught in the context of student writing.

v The two most important phases of the writing process are planning and revising.

We will also explore ways RtI, SDI, Drafting, Repetition and other strategies can that help support Special Education students in their writing.
