REMEMBER HER NAME

Phyllis Battle, Born in Chicago and raised in New York, she is a phenomenal vocalist whose style will take you to another dimension. Whether she’s soaring with a symphony, sizzling in the studio or swinging with a jazz band she will astound you.

Phyllis knows how to take the audience on a journey, through music laced with sprinklings of her scripted narrative. She has a unique way of imparting knowledge about jazz history, while showcasing her masterful repertoire of skills as a true jazz vocal stylist.

Phyllis sang with the internationally acclaimed, nine Grammy Award winning group The 5th Dimension for sixteen years. However, it is with her solo Grammy nominated CD, “Night Flight”, a straight ahead jazz project produced by the late, great Cedar Walton and Billy Higgins, executive producer that one truly gets to enjoy her vocal styling. As a result of her Grammy nominated CD “Night Flight”, Phyllis gained attention that resulted in more performances out of the country, which garnered rave reviews. During her extended tour in Thailand, she recorded her CD, “Battle in Bangkok”. She sang for the King of Thailand and an entourage of international dignitaries attending the celebration of his 60th anniversary reign.

Not to leave any stones unturned Phyllis is the writer, producer and also performs her one-woman show entitled “Satin Dolls”. To the backdrop of a jazz trio, she dons costumes and personalities in this original work that pays tribute to Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, Dinah Washington and Nina Simone. Phyllis has enjoyed an impressive career as a solo artist, which has allowed her to focus on her first musical love, which is jazz.

During the course of her musical romance, she has toured worldwide with artists such as Frank Sinatra, Nancy Sinatra, Rita Coolidge, Donna Summers and a host of others. She has opened shows for Joe Williams, Poncho Sanchez, Ronnie Laws, Gerald Albright and Diane Reeves to name a few. In addition, she has done studio sessions with Stanley Clark, George Duke, Bernard Ighner, David Peaston and The S.O.S. Band. And for three years Phyllis served as the Artistic Director and script writer for the acclaimed "Instrumental Women” annual Jazz concert series. Along with singing, acting and recording Phyllis’ entrepreneurial spirit shines forth, as CEO of JA-PHYL’S, her Production Company and more recently she serves as an “Arts Commissioner” for the City of Inglewood.
