Event description

Description

Men constitue over 90 percent of the prison population in America. As a result, most formerly incarcerated citizens are men. What does this mean for how we structure how reentry programs and support members of our community as they come home? What unique challenges do men face, especially in this age of shifting gender norms?

Join us on Tuesday, July 30 as we explore these questions, a special event hosted by Defy Ventures and All Kings, two New York-based programs working to support men impacted by the criminal justice system.

We'll begin with a special screening of The Work, the acclaimed documentary detailing a four-day intensive group therapy process in Fulsom County Prison. Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the South by SouthWest film festival, the film highlights the devastating effects of both the American prison system and patriarchal norms.

The screening will be followed by a conversation with organizers and participants in Defy Ventures and All Kings about the issues portrayed in the film and how their respective organizations are working to tackle the challenges -- and the unique opportunities -- of reentry.

Doors open at 6:30pm. Film starts at 7:00pm.

Seating is limited.

"The Work carries a profound, implicit point about a culture that encourages men to bottle up what they feel, then condemns them after those emotions express themselves in violent, destructive ways." (Onion AV Club)
