Event description

Description

Guided tour with historian Beverly Tyler explores the history of shipbuilding in Setauket, NY. Guests will learn about shipbuilders, ship captains, and families prominent in Setauket’s maritime history. Discover how the shipbuilding industry influenced the development of roads and homes on Dyers Neck.

The walk is approximately 1 and 1/2 hours and will take tour-goers along Shore Road to Scott's Cove and return. The walking tour explores the Dyer’s Neck-East Setauket Historic Shipbuilding District where coast-wise and ocean-going ships were built and where these local families, lived, worked and died. You will see the carpenter shop where the construction planning took place and visit the area where completed ships wintered over. This tour will be conducted at low tide so that the bones of the schooners will be uncovered in Scott’s Cove.

As a special treat you will see the home where Benjamin Tallmadge, General Washington's intelligence chief was born as well as the location of the house where Anna Smith Strong lived during the Revolutionary War and where she setup her clothesline code to let Culper Spy Ring chief Abraham Woodhull know where Caleb Brewster was hiding with his whaleboat to bring spy messages across Long Island Sound to General Washington.
