Event description
The Women's Rights Law Reporter (WRLR) is hosting our Spring Symposium on April 17, 2019

About this Event

WRLR, founded in part by Ruth Bader Ginsburg when she was a faculty member at Rutgers Law School, is dedicating its Spring Symposium to the issue of campus sexual assault. This topic impacts every student in pre-K, elementary school, middle school, high school and on college campuses. The symposium will have three focus areas, with a panel dedicated to each one: legal, psychological effects of trauma, and advocacy efforts toward ending sexual assault.

The proposed Title IX regulations issued by the Department of Education in November 2018 will be the jumping off point of the symposium. We hope to come away from the conference with an advocacy plan to strengthen protections for student victims of sexual harassment and abuse.

Keynote speakers at the Symposium will be Fatima Goss Graves, President and CEO of the National Women's Law Center in Washington D.C. and Suzanne Goldberg, Executive Vice President of Student Affairs and Professor of Law at Columbia University in New York City.

Panels & Speakers include:

Mental Health - Dr. Tracy Shors, Rutgers University; Dr. Kate Walsh, Yeshiva University; Dr. Jennifer Hirsch, Columbia University.

Effectiveness of the Law (Title IX & Ending Campus Sexual Assault) - Professor Nancy Cantalupo, Barry University School of Law; Professor Penny Venetis, Rutgers University - Newark.

Advocacy & Organizing - Patricia Teffenhart, New Jersey Coalition Against Sexual Assault.

Rutgers Law School has long played a leadership role in diversity and inclusion, as well as social justice. We are proud to host a variety of experts, from within and outside our New Jersey community, to host engaging and nuanced conversations about these topics. Our symposium is being held in collaboration with the Rutgers Center for Gender, Sexuality, Law & Policy.

The symposium will be held on Wednesday, April 17, 2019. Registration for the symposium will take place at 9:00am in the lobby of the law school. Breakfast will be served at 10:00am. The speakers and panelists will conclude their remarks around 6:00pm. A reception will follow in the law school, ending at 8:00pm. Keynote addresses and panels will be held in the Baker Court Room at Rutgers Law School, 123 Washington Street, Newark, NJ 07102.

Tickets to the symposium are free, but we welcome donations!
