Event description

Description

The Dashkova Centre and the Russian Department of the University of Edinburgh invite you to come see the Russian language students' adaptation of Teffi's 1907 comedic play Женский Вопрос (The Woman Question). Within a modern-day Russia that has never experienced the Revolution of 1917, a young girl feels disaffected by her dependent position in society and goes to feminist demonstrations to escape a family that derides her independent ambitions. One night, the girl falls asleep and sees an absurd dream, which is played out for the audience to see. The patriarchy has become a matriarchy after a bloody war, and comedic consequences ensue. Yet, aside from the comedy, the play poses questions that make us pause: Are men and women fundamentally different? Do our professions dictate our personalities? How should responsibilities be divided equally in families? Come see the play to experience the uniquely Russian combination of comedy and philosophy.

The audience will afterwards be invited to a reception in the Project Room of 50 George Square for wine and nibblets and a chance to meet the actors.

*N.B. The play is in Russian; Kid-friendly. Though the event is free, registration is advised in order to finalise catering.
