ABOUT COAST

On September 15, everyone is invited to this free city celebration of a more people-powered and sustainable Santa Monica where they can showcase their favorite real or imaginary car-free way of getting around. In addition to the two miles of car-free streets filled with roaming musicians, hands-on activities and an assortment of participatory classes, the event will be a pageant of attendees’ creativity.

Free, artist-led workshops in late August and early September will provide inspiration and materials to create and decorate costumes, conveyances, walking pieces or devices. People are also welcomed to decorate on their own or collaborate with friends, family and neighbors to create a larger than life moving installation that will be featured the day of the event. Attendees will bring, wear, or ride their creations to the streets on event day, where there will be opportunities to win prizes for creativity and innovation.

The event will be held on more than two miles of car-free streets in and around Downtown Santa Monica, including Ocean Ave. from Wilshire Blvd. to Colorado Ave., Colorado Esplanade from 5th St. to and including the Pier, and Main St. from Colorado Ave. to Pier Ave.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

THE WINTER OFFICE is an artist group and work network consisting of artists, curators, architects, designers and social scientists founded in 2010 by the American artist Hugo Hopping and the Danish architect/urban planner Johanna Ferrer Guldager. Established in 2010, THE WINTER OFFICE upholds a creative strategy concerned with blending and defining collaborations between art, architecture, social science and design. As a network and work group it also seeks design challenges in cultural, developmental, educational, and disaster-recovery infrastructure that is needed in urban, suburban, and exurban environments. Drawing on architecture, planning, and social science research, THE WINTER OFFICE hopes to respond with initiatives that can express themselves both in art and architecture in favor of new uses for social/urban planning and design. To this end, the group seeks to enable the production of final objects, constructions, research and exhibitions to raise the quality of the built environment. The group is based in Copenhagen, Denmark.
