The Wild Beast
World Percussion Ensemble
An Evening of World Percussion
Opening the concert will be the CalArts World Percussion Ensemble, an ongoing
experimental forum for bringing together the percussion, drumming and world music
at CalArts, bridging cultures and musical ideas and creating an entirely new work for
percussion consisting of both highly fixed compositions and extended improvisations, led
by Randy Gloss and Houman Pourmehdi.
The second half of the program will feature an all-star CalArts faculty ensemble honoring
founding world music faculty member Alfred Ladzekpo, on the eve of his retirement.
This tribute concert will feature performances by Swapan Chaudhuri, I Nyoman Wenten,
Randy Gloss, Andrew Grueschow, Houman Pourmehdi, and the guest of honor himself—
The evening’s festivities will further be augmented by performances by a visiting artist
from Brazil, percussionist and pandeiro maestro Guello, who will perform solo and with
the CalArts World Percussion Ensemble and CalArts faculty ensemble.
Visiting Artist from Brazil, pandeiro maestro Guello:
Luis Carlos Xavier Guello began his percussion career with samba master Osvaldinho da
Cuíca. During the 1980s he formed Grupo Livre Percussao, researching and composing
pieces based on Brazilian rhythms. He has recorded with some of the greatest Brazilian
artists such as Zizi Possi, Paulo Moura, Joyce, Marco Pereira, Monica Solmaso, Badi
Assad, Edson Cordeiro, Antônio Nóbrega and Sá e Guarabira. He is a former member
of Banda Sossega-Leao and the legendary Mexe-com-Tudo, a band that electrified São
Paulo nights for more than a decade. Guello has taught at the Conservatório de Música
de Tatuí and has been acclaimed as one of the most important Brazilian percussionists
and pandeiro players. Currently, he is a member of Orquestra Popular de Câmara, Banda
Mantiqueira, André Mehmari Trio and Bonsai Trio.
