Event description

Description

The Why of Scrum is a half-day workshop to explore the principles and values of Scrum. It is aimed at those who already have Scrum experience and are looking to deepen their understanding.

Philosophy

"Scrum: simple, clean, reflective, unrelenting, melodic."

This workshop is centered on the belief that Scrum is a radically different way of working, and not some kind of superficial reframe of work-as-usual. Focusing on the principles beneath the framework and process, reaching into your own personal value system to draw out meaning, this workshop will have you challenge how you show up for work, and what you believe it means to "do Agile".

The learning emerges from the shared experience of all in the room. This is not expert-led—indeed the idea of expertise in Agile is itself challenged. Participants are invited to bring their own experience to bear on the learning, and to express their expectations, desires and frustrations. Ultimately, what you learn here will emerge from your heart, and take form in the practice you apply back in the workplace.

  • "...if we could remember how we learned as a young child, and we could find a way to hold on to the keenness and the drive we then had, we would never again wonder about the Why of Scrum. But we can't and we do. Here is where Tobias's workshop comes in."Francis Laleman, previous participant

Content

The Scrum framework will be revisited, not as a What but as a Why. Relationships between the Scrum roles will be revealed, showing the vitality of "individuals and interactions over processes and tools". The guiding principles of purpose, alignment, focus, release and rhythm will be explored to understand how these concepts must underpin any effective Scrum implementation.

  • "An inspiring workshop. It was great to take a step back and reflect with other experienced practitioners on why we use Scrum."John Nonweiler, previous participant

Workshop Form

The Why of Scrum does not rely on powerpoint or lecture, rather it utilises pedagogical techniques widely known to create a deeper, and longer-lasting learning, one that each participant can take ownership of and develop in his or her own way. These techniques include team interaction, socratic dialog, drawing and painting, improvisation, theatre games, and exploration through metaphor. You will not sit still for long, and you'll not be fed information. You are expected to show up with an open mind and an open heart, and to bring your own experiences to share with others.

  • Tobias has a unique coaching style and manner which projects calm confidence yet, an engaging vulnerability. He took us back to basics whilst also providing a different perspective. It was a thought provoking afternoon, spent with a diverse and friendly group. I think the test of any workshop is how much of what you learnt are you still using a month later. I can honestly say that I continue to use the themes, concepts and stories today.Donyale Michael, previous participant
