The Wheel Knockers w/ Buck O' Five, and Slim Chance & the Convicts
Saturday, September 14, 2013 at 8:00 PM (EDT)
Join us for a honky-tonkin', country rockin' night at Red Light Café with The Wheel Knockers, Buck O' Five, and Slim Chance & the Convicts!
Formed in Atlanta in 2009, The Wheel Knockers play Indie Rock with a dash of Alt Country inspiration. When their last project flamed out, bandmates Jet Powers and John McRae (of surf / garage n'er-do-wells El Capitan & Thee Scallywags) decided to continue their musical collaboration with a new “alt country" influenced band... or something close to it.
After linking up with vocalist Chip Waller and drummer Bob Berry (Soul Proprietors), the quartet began rehearsing in Atlanta in the summer of 2009. Tallahassee transplant and Intoxicators / Disasternauts guitarist Gary Evans joined the group in the fall of 2009 as the missing piece of the puzzle and The Wheel Knockers were officially born. Playing music that is probably best described as Indie Rock (influences include The Jayhawks, Old '97's and The Lemonheads), their sound continues to evolve in complexity and scope. The Wheel Knockers just recorded their first EP entitled “Last Train Out.” Their live performances add another dimension to a sound that is decidedly diverse and always energetic.
The people have spoken and the comments are normally, "You guys are the Gram Parsons of today" or "You are a cross between David Allan Coe and Johnny Cash". You decide for yourself and let us know. Buck O' Five has recently released a 5 song EP and is currently putting together tracks for upcoming CD called the Glen Iris Sessions. The amount of miles logged by the members of this band show in their musical prowess, songs and stage persona. They are truly a band to catch when you can.
The founding fathers of Atlanta's Redneck Underground, Slim Chance & the Convicts have been twanging for 27 years. Formed in 1986 in order to keep GSU psychology grad students Slim & Dan from going crazy (along with Tony on drums), the Convicts quickly made a name for themselves by playing a veritable cornucopia of musical styles, most within the framework of traditional country music. With three albums and another on the way soon, the two time "Creative Loafing's Best Country Band" were instrumental in the creation of the storied Redneck Underground, a local scene that continues to this day. From the earliest shows at Georgia Retardation Center to The Austin Avenue Buffet, The White Dot, Ray Lee's, The Point, and The Star Bar, the mighty Convicts have also played such notable venues as Variety Playhouse, Lakewood Amphitheater, Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Tootsie's Orchid Lounge in Nashville, and many others. Many members have come and gone over the years, but a Convict show is always an evening of entertainment, filled with classic sounding and edgy original tunes, and a plethora of cover songs we love to play. As the convicts start their 28th year, the future looks good. We hope you will be a part of it.
