THE VIOLA DESMOND LECTURE: TACKLING GENTRIFICATION AND RACISM
Event Information
About this Event
The Consulate General of Canada in Atlanta in partnership with Morehouse College Journalism and Sports Program, the Andrew Young Center for Global Leadership and Morehouse College Human Rights Film Festival presents a film screening and panel discussion that will explore gentrification and Black racism in Canada, and the use of film and social media to support community activism.
The Viola Desmond Lecture series is named for Viola Desmond, a Black Canadian woman and successful entrepreneur who was arrested in 1946 for refusing to leave a Whites-only area of a Nova Scotia movie theatre . Her court case inspired the pursuit of racial equality across Canada. She is now the face of Canada’s $10 bill.
