One of the biggest events in the calendar, every year Escape Studios hosts The VFX, Games and Animation Festival. Now in its 7th year, it’s known as a celebration of the creative industries and a showcase of talent.

In response to industry needs, the 7th year of our annual festival brings an exciting new format, to deliver the most relevant content. The VFX Festival 2019 will consist of events taking place in February and June 2019. Our all events are targeted at different audiences. The VFX Festival 2019 (#VFXFestival) will include a number of talks, keynote sessions, workshops, exhibition spaces and panel discussions from talent across the industry, as well as lots of networking opportunities.

The VFX, Games and Animation Festival also focuses on the wealth of changes taking place in the creative industries and how these elements are diversifying and changing to adapt to the future.

About The VFX Festival After Hours

This 2-day event will take place on 5 - 6 June 2019 in the heart of London, within walking distance from the award winning studios and creative companies. Hosted in state of the art facilities in Holborn, these late afternoon technical talks and workshops are dedicated to professionals looking for knowledge-building and networking opportunities and students looking to progress their career in the creative industries.



Programme:

DAY 1 - Wednesday, 5 June 2019 - After Hours with Epic Games / Unreal (delivered by Escape Studios) | 17:30 - 21:00



Epic Games is a creator of Unreal Engine - a complete suite of development tools made for anyone working with real-time technology. From enterprise applications and cinematic experiences to high-quality games across PC, console, mobile, VR and AR, Unreal Engine 4 gives you everything you need to start, ship, grow and stand out from the crowd. A world-class toolset and accessible workflows empower developers to quickly iterate on ideas and see immediate results without touching a line of code, while full source code access gives everyone in the Unreal Engine 4 community the freedom to modify and extend engine features.

Workshop 1: Introduction to Blueprint in UE4 with Juriaan VanLinschoten

This workshop is an Introduction to object oriented visual scripting inside of Unreal Engine with the use of Blueprints. You will learn how to navigate through blueprints, it's different types and usages and create real time interactions. At the end of the workshop you will have a basic understanding of blueprints, how to trigger animations, material changes and blueprint communication.


Workshop 2: Visual FX in Unreal with Tom Harle

An introduction to Visual FX in Unreal, creating a Magic spell effect - covering simple Animated Materials, applying them to Particle systems and then controlling both with Blueprints and Timelines. After attending this workshop you’ll have a basic understanding of the full VFX pipeline and how you can create and control visuals in Unreal Engine. A basic understanding of the Unreal Engine interface and 3D concepts is recommended for this advanced course.


Workshop 3: An introduction to creating a modular environment in Unreal Engine 4 with Phil Meredith

An introduction to Unreal Engine 4, creating a modular environment. This workshop is for beginners offering a broad overview of the Unreal Engine, learning resources and environment assembly. After attending the workshop, you will be comfortable with the interface and scene navigation, materials, lighting and environment assembly.


Workshop 4: Unreal Material Production with Jordan Wills

A deeper look at the Unreal Material editor focusing on, creating master materials to help author libraries, utilise material functions for repetitive tasks and add complexity through detail normal maps and vertex painting. By the end of this workshop you will have a deeper understanding of the material editor and understand the concepts to build complex, consistent materials for your projects. This is an intermediate level workshop, so attendees should have a basic understanding of the unreal engine and some 3D concepts.

Topics Covered

- Setting up a Master material with generic functionality for use on all assets.

- Creating useful Material Functions to speed up repetitive tasks.

- Setting up detail normal maps for high frequency details

- Height and mask based Vertex Paint

DAY 2 - Thursday, 6 June 2019 - After Hours with SideFX | 17:30 - 21:00



Established in 1987, SideFX is a world leader in the development of advanced 3D animation and visual effects software for use in film, TV, commercials and video games. SideFX has been recognized four times with Scientific and Technical awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, including an Oscar statue in 2018. SideFX was also awarded with a Technical Emmy for its Crowds toolset in 2019. Houdini is used by numerous leading digital content creation facilities including: Pixar Animation Studios, Ubisoft, Walt Disney Animation, Blizzard Entertainment, Blue Sky Studios, Digital Domain, DNEG, Electronic Arts, Framestore, Guerrilla Games, Sony Pictures Imageworks - and thousands more.

Workshop 1: PDG in Houdini Workflows - Louis-Philippe Clavet, CG Supervisor, Oblique FX (Montreal)

Discover how we can use the recently introduced PDG technology for generative design in Houdini. During this 2-hour overview of PDG, we will explore how to export geometry and wedge simulations. We will also cover some basic pipeline automations as well as image and video processing. These concepts will help us build a generative design system which keeps the artist in the driving seat of co-creation with the machine.


Workshop 2: Intro to Houdini FX - Mark Spevick, Head of 3D, Escape Studios

From novice to advanced user, Houdini caters to a wide variety of skill levels. It all depends on how low-level you want to work. Each stage has its own ability levels. They are easy to advance through with guidance.

The levels can be roughly summarised as :

• Just being able to set up and tweak shelf effects

• Able to understand the network and build yourself

• Start to use more advanced lower level nodes and scripting to customise effects and to build tools

We will look at some effects at each of the levels.

In Part One, we will start by looking at the bullet set-up with glue (from the shelf) and then customising with the soft constraint node. We will set up the same effect at each ‘level’ as outlined above and will highlight the differences between them.

In Part Two, we'll look at the pyro setup from shelf, then through to customising it.

On 5 - 6 June 2019 The VFX Festival After Hours will take place at Escape Studios and Pearson College London facilities.

Escape Studios campus at 190 High Holborn means being closer to dazzling inspirations.

Take a 15 minute walk and find yourself in Soho - an area packed with prolific cinemas, theatres, music venues and creative studios. Soho houses some of the biggest studios in the world.
