Event description

Description

On average, 10% of the clients seeking services in a community agency in Washington are veterans. This population has a significantly higher rate of having sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). A TBI increases the client’s risk of being diagnosed with a mental disorder, having an atypical response to typically prescribed medications, suicide, homelessness and others. Add to this the challenge of overcoming the “battle brain” that is instilled while in the military and the veteran client presents with a set of unique challenges to the community provider. In this presentation, the participant will learn how to identify the veteran client, insight into military culture, the prevalence of TBI in this community (why and how), how to properly assess for the veteran and TBI, how to properly code TBI, how to incorporate veteran and TBI issues into a treatment plan and the resources available to them.
