Description

The Venezuelan Migration Crisis in Colombia: Local Governance Challenges

Tuesday, April 9

10:00am - 11:30am

Embattled by decades of political strife and conflict, Latin America is facing yet another daunting challenge: the Venezuelan migration crisis. Waves of Venezuelan refugees and migrants have flooded into neighboring Colombia, and local institutions, citizens and cities have mobilized to meet and address the challenges. Yet the wide-reaching effects and intricacy of the crisis demand enhanced solutions.

During this event, IRI and Sayara International will present their research on the intersection of governance and migration, with an aim to understand how community-level interventions can help alleviate the pressure put on communities dealing with the brunt of the Venezuelan influx.

The panel will include:

Luca Dall'Oglio, Chief of Mission, International Organization for Migration, Washington Office

Tony Garrastazu, Senior Director, Center for Global Impact, International Republican Institute

Dr. Steve Olive, Acting Assistant Administrator, Bureau for Latin America and Caribbean, USAID

Gisela Zapata, Migration Specialist, Sayara International

Moderated by:

Stephen Johnson, Regional Director, Latin America and the Caribbean, International Republican Institute
