On behalf of London Festival of Architecture 2017, We Made That presents The Unlimited Edition: Live!
Taking inspiration from the fifth edition of our recently published place-based newspaper, a morning of guided tours will explore productive places on our doorstep in Bermondsey.
As housing pressures continue to drive redevelopment, the city’s ability to provide and protect spaces of work is being dented. London needs to aspire to a condition beyond ‘mixed use’ – a term which has become both ubiquitous and diluted in its promise to deliver. A gym, supermarket or an un-occupied office unit at the ground floor of a new residential tower does not mixed use make. London needs more. London needs supermix.
Supermix captures a more varied and radical conception of mix which helps us conceive of ways in which to defend mixed places of work where they exist, intensify London’s industrial sites and shape new developments to include a greater variety of workplaces.
Bermondsey shows us how supermix can work. Bermondsey, historically known as the ‘Larder of London’, grew as a neighbourhood of food exchange and production that fed the city. Today, the area’s industrial and maritime past hosts sites where housing, retail, industry and creative activity operate successfully alongside one another. The supermix tour will explore this history and highlight how the area continues to feed London as well as hosting artists, printers, and production houses amongst others.
Join us to skip, sip and sniff around Bermondsey’s supermix sites, stopping off at industrious sites across the neighbourhood, including spaces for brewing, baking and making.
The Unlimited Edition newspaper takes a super-local look at urban places. Issue V: Bermondsey is available here.
