California Supreme Court Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar will join us in a discussion moderated by Associate Vice Chancellor of Academic Diversity Raquel Aldana.

In this wide-ranging discussion, Justice Cuéllar will speak on a variety of law and policy issues, including many of the challenges facing higher education today. These issues are timely and important in light of recent national discussions over such issues as admissions policies and practices, Statements on Contributions to Diversity and Equity, immigration policies, and DACA. Taking the long view from his years of experience working on issues of equity and excellence, Justice Cuéllar is in a unique position to reflect on the import of college access in the context of the California Master Plan for Higher Education.
Biography:
Justice Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar began serving on the Supreme Court of California in January 2015. He is a scholar of public law and institutions whose books and articles explore topics ranging from administrative law and legislation to cyberlaw and criminal justice. Justice Cuéllar served as Special Assistant to the President for Justice and Regulatory Policy at the White House (2009–10), where he led the Domestic Policy Council staff responsible for civil and criminal justice, public health law and policy, and immigration. He also led the Presidential Transition Task Force on Immigration (2008–09) and co-chaired the U.S. Department of Education’s Equity and Excellence Commission (2011–13). A fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Justice Cuéllar was previously the Stanley Morrison Professor of Law at Stanford University and led the university's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies.
