Event description

Description

To celebrate Banned Books Week, LA MADE presents the first public screening of this academy award-nominated documentary on the life and work of Lenny Bruce in over a decade.

With humor and pathos, director Robert B. Weide profiles this provocative social comic and features rare, unaired TV appearances, newsreel and home movie footage, and interviews with Bruce's mother, wife, daughter, lawyers, club owners, friends, and prosecutors.

The screening is followed by a discussion of the film with director Robert Weide and comedy historian Kliph Nesteroff.

Robert B. Weide is an Oscar-nominated and Emmy-winning filmmaker whose documentaries have covered the Marx Brothers, W.C. Fields, Mort Sahl, Lenny Bruce, Woody Allen, and Kurt Vonnegut. He was also the Executive Producer and director of the HBO series “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”

Kliph Nesteroff is a former stand-up comic turned writer. A longtime contributor to WFMU, writing about the history of comedy, Nesteroff’s latest project is hosting the Classic Showbiz Talk Show, a live series in Los Angeles that has welcomed comedy luminaries like Mel Brooks, Fred Willard, and Laugh-In creator George Schlatter.
