The Truce of the Towers
After six years of war the people of the realms are exhausted. The Alliance of the White Council and the Servants of the Enemy have battled each other to a standstill. The Tower of the Sun lies in ruins, the Tower of Iron is besieged, the gates of the Enemy are smashed, but everywhere the voice of the people is united. “This cannot go on. We must have peace.”
The Truce of the Towers is a negotiation megagame inspired by J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. In this scenario the Enemy's great weapon was never found. Instead, He was forced to launch a vast military offensive against the Free Peoples. Legions of orcs and evil men battled in the south, whilst His loyal allies attacked the settlements of men, elves and dwarves throughout the known world. But, to His surprise, the strength of men did not fail, the old alliances were honoured, and His advancing legions were met, halted, and matched.
Now, years later, the final offensive has stalled, the reserves are spent, the coffers are empty. The Great War has not been truly won or lost, but the belligerents are at an impasse and have been forced, finally, to negotiate.
You will take the role of one of the major players in this struggle. Your objective is to achieve a peace settlement that will most benefit your side. Exactly what this means is up to you! You might push for a strategic deal that puts you in a good position to win the next war, or a political deal that secures a homeland for your people, or even a grand bargain that will ensure peace for a thousand years! You will achieve this settlement through diplomacy, exchanges of money and territory, and the threat of further violence. But be warned! The people of the realms will not accept a general remobilisation and return to hostilities. If you cannot secure peace in our time you will be overthrown, perhaps with dangerous extremists or traitors, and will have to swallow whatever deal they table.
You might be thinking, "I don't understand! What's a megagame?". A megagame is a team based event played out in person, over the course of several hours, with anything from a dozen to hundreds of other players. The objective isn't to roleplay, to wargame, or to LARP (Live Action Role Play - dressing up in period or fantastical outfits), but to handle a complicated and developing crisis through fast thinking, fast talking, and decisive action. You might think of it like an Escape Room, except the Room is other people, and they fight back.
In this scenario you will be taking on the role of a Faction Leader, Military Leader, or Diplomat in one of the major factions in a Lord of the Rings style fantasy world. You won't have to dress up, or put on a voice (though getting into character by dressing up is always encouraged!), but you will have to work against a crumbling military, desperate population, and numerous other player teams to find a political solution to the crisis. If that doesn't sound like a fun way to spend a Saturday I don't know what is!
Players are encouraged to sign up in teams of three. If you are signing up as part of a team, please email a list of team members (including preferred faction and player roles if you know what they are) to firstname.lastname@example.org.
If you don't have a full team of three, or wish to sign up alone, don't worry! Again, email your preference to email@example.com, noting that you don't have a full team and we will match you up with other players.
The currently available factions are: The Realms of Men, The Elven Council, The Dwarven Kingdom, The Enemy, The Wizard-King. These factions may be broken into sub-factions if the game is oversubscribed.
