How to help faith communities with lifestyle change

A practical session exploring how to help people live lower-carbon lifestyles. Drawing on groundbreaking research, theology, organisational expertise and personal stories, we'll explore the barriers to people engaging, and practical tools and ways of communicating that help to create real change.

In their effort to inspire lifestyle change among Christians, Tearfund has produced new films about how we can each play our part, hosted blogs written by supporters such as 'Spain by train not by plane' and guides from staff including: 'six reasons why you should switch to solar' or 'Is going vegan a big missed steak?'.

As part of Tearfund's political campaigns and lobbying, lifestyle actions have been an important marker of social norm change. From the take up of food waste feasts by churches or individuals pledging to fly less and drive less on our Lifestyle webpage during campaigns on climate change. To improve their communications and reach a broader audience, Tearfund drew from the innovative research and expertise of Climate Outreach, and their most recent research on 'mainstreaming low-carbon lifestyles' will help guide our conversation in this session.

Jack Wakefiled is a campaigner at Tearfund and is passionate about ethical living and helping people to see their every decisions as acts of worship and a powerful force for change. Speaking regularly at churches and conferences around the UK, combined with studying Theology at University of Oxford and pioneering the Caring for Creation branch of Just Love UK, a movement of Christian university students passionate about justice, he is well positioned to guide us through the topic of ethical living and communicating that people of faith. Favourite foods: baked beans and ice cream, but never in the same bowl.
