Event Details

People of faith have been taking non violent direct action to highlight the urgency of the climate crisis as part of Extinction Rebellion.

Come and hear three activists tell how their faith compels them to act for the climate, their own experience of non-violent direct action, and how you can get involved.

Ruth Jarman is an activist with Christian Climate Action. After graduating in Chemistry from Oxford University, Ruth Jarman worked in the semiconductor industry in Somerset, Paris and California. With others, she started Christian Climate Action in 2012, with the aim of using non-violent direct action and public witness as a way of following Jesus Christ in the face climate breakdown. Christian Climate Action has been in the forefront of the recent Extinction Rebellion movement.

Joseph Mishan works as a psychotherapist and is a mindfulness teacher. He has a long-term commitment to environmental activism and was instrumental in setting up the London group of Dharma Action Network for Climate Engagement (DANCE). DANCE is an engaged Buddhist group and the London group is currently focussing on regular meditation at Barclays Bank, and involved in Extinction Rebellion in a direct action and support role.

Rabbi Jeffrey Newman is part of XR Jews, and has been increasingly concerned with what we human are doing to Earth, our home, over the past 50 years. With the help of companions in Extinction Rebellion, he is beginning to learn through Non-Violent Direct Action how to combine the urgency of action with calm and loving respect for the Other.

The Time is Now organiser’s note: The mass lobby on 26th June is a peaceful and safe event for people to meet their MP to discuss climate change and the environment. Westminster Council and the police are fully aware of and happy with our plans.
