Description

Is it ethical to invest in fossil fuels?

More than 1,000 organisations around the world with more than $8.5 trillion (£6.5 trillion) in assets under management, including New York City, the Royal College of GPs and the Universities of Cardiff and Edinburgh, have taken the step of divesting from fossil fuels in response to the growing climate crisis.

Faith groups have been at the forefront of the global divestment movement. The World Council of Churches, Kolot Chayeinu (a synagogue in New York), the Islamic Society of North America and Sydney Buddhist Centre are among the organisations to have divested.

Here in the UK, the Quakers in Britain and the United Reformed Church Synods of Scotland and Yorkshire are leading the way. However, most faith institutions including the Church of England and the Catholic Church continue to invest significant sums in fossil fuel companies such as BP, Shell and ExxonMobil.

More than 200 MPs have now signed the Divest Parliament pledge. This April, the UK Parliament pension fund took the first step towards divestment, though there is still further to go before its investments go fossil free.

Join this workshop to find out more about what we can do to get our faith institutions and the UK Parliament to divest from fossil fuels and invest in the future we all want to see.
