Join Samaria Rice and Theaster Gates for a celebration of the arts to honor the life and legacy of Tamir Rice. Ms. Rice will unveil plans for the new Tamir Rice Afrocentric Cultural Center that will provide artistic, educational and civic youth programs that celebrate the history and culture of people of African descent. Ms. Rice will be joined by artist and activist Theaster Gates who will discuss his artistic practices and his personal and professional efforts to preserve Tamir’s legacy.
Tamir Rice’s fifth anniversary commemoration will follow at 6 pm at the Cleveland Museum of Art,11150 East Boulevard. This evening of music, dance, film, and visual art will examine the role of contemporary artists during times of racial and political unrest. The commemoration will explore how art has been utilized to pursue justice for Tamir, the efforts of artists to keep Tamir’s story at the forefront of public discourse, and the participation and growing influence of Samaria Rice in the art world.
